Indonesia Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Rail Project
The Jakarta–Bandung High-Speed Railway connects Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta, with its fourth-largest city, Bandung. It is the first high-speed railway in Southeast Asia and marks the first time China has exported a full high-speed rail system—including technology, standards, equipment, and entire industrial chain—to an overseas project.
Launched in 2016, the project has made steady and significant progress under the direct support of the leaders of China and Indonesia. As a landmark achievement of the two countries’ high-quality cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative, the Jakarta–Bandung HSR vividly demonstrates the deepening China–Indonesia community of shared future and embodies the principles of extensive consultation, joint contribution, and shared benefits.
The railway is 142 kilometers long. Recently, its comprehensive test train reached a speed of 350 km/h for the first time—peaking at 386 km/h—indicating that the line has met its design-speed requirements. The completion of this railway reflects the vitality of China–Indonesia relations and stands as a symbol of growing economic cooperation between China and Asia-Pacific countries.
According to Indonesian media such as Kompas, the Jakarta–Bandung High-Speed Railway is scheduled to open on August 17, 2023, coinciding with Indonesia’s 78th Independence Day. Once operational, travel time between Jakarta and Bandung will be reduced from over three hours to just 40 minutes.
